THE STREETS OF NEWARK TO THE HALLS OF ACADEMIA: AN AMERICAN STORY is a memoir that takes the reader back to the experiences of a son of immigrant parents, brother, soldier, teacher, an athlete, and finally, a professor and academic administrator. Growing up in a Jewish working-class family during the Great Depression in Newark, New Jersey, the author brings to life an archetypal American story of a young boy's struggle to rise above poverty and discrimination. In this memoir, the author not only allows the reader to experience the family's bout with unemployment and a brother's deteriorating health, but also intersperses humor and remembrances of familial love, gridiron passion, World War II encounters, and the hope which firmly shaped the author's direction and academic achievements.
Nathan Weiss was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1922 and holds a doctorate in government from New York University. His first book, AT THE CENTER OF THE STORM, REFLECTIONS OF A STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT, was published in 1994 and explores his 20 years as president of Kean College of New Jersey. He currently holds the title of President Emeritus and is the recipient of numerous awards and three honorary doctorates.
Weiss is now retired and resides in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey with his wife, Bernice R. Rydell, Vice President for Finance and Administration Emerita, Millersville University of Pennsylvania.
