More Summer in Brooklyn (The Brooklyn Diaries) Overview

The author of WITH HITLER IN NEW YORK, LINCOLN'S DOCTOR'S DOG, I SURVIVED CARACAS TRAFFIC and other short story collections has kept a daily diary for forty years, since he was 18 in the summer of 1969. Here are entries from his diary for summers from 1976 to 1979 as he struggles with adulthood and his fledgling writing career, from his first acceptances by magazines to the hardcover publication of his book by a large New York publisher.

Set in 1970s New York City, this is a vivid picture of what it was like to be a struggling young artist in that era as the author and his friends come of age in a time of urban decay, blackouts and looting, and street crime but also thrilling adventures in the worlds of music, book and magazine publishing, politics and cultural ferment in their neighborhood haunts in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.

A sequel of sorts to SUMMER IN BROOKLYN: 1969-1975, and the fifth volume of the author's complied 1970s BROOKLYN DIARIES, MORE SUMMER IN BROOKLYN deals with ordinary extended Jewish family life as well as scenes set in New York clubs, art hot spots, cheap but trendy restaurnants and literary bookstores.

Everyting from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference in Vermont to watching Jimmy carter deal with his elderly mother at the 1976 Democratic convention is fodder for Grayson's daily dairy entries in MORE SUMMER IN BROOKLYN.
